An aircraft operator's guide to Tanzania and operating through Dar es Salaam (HTDA/DAR)

Julius Nyerere International Airport (HTDA/DAR), serving Dar es Salaam, is Tanzania's primary international gateway and one of East Africa's busiest airports. Understanding the regulatory and operational landscape here is essential for smooth operations.

    Permit Requirements

All non-scheduled international flights require a landing permit from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA). Permits should be applied for at least 72 hours in advance. Overflight permits are typically processed in 24–48 hours.

    Ground Handling

HTDA has multiple ground handling options. Advance handler selection is recommended to secure parking slots and ramp services, particularly during peak seasons around wildlife safari periods (July–October).

    Fuel

Jet-A1 fuel is reliably available at Dar es Salaam. Uplift confirmations should be made 24 hours prior to arrival. International fuel cards are accepted at the major FBO facilities.

    Customs and Immigration

Tanzania has a straightforward immigration process for crew. Crew visas are typically issued on arrival. Passengers from most countries can obtain tourist visas on arrival or via the official e-Visa portal.

Tanzania remains one of Africa's premier aviation destinations due to its world-class safari circuits, Zanzibar beach operations, and Kilimanjaro mountain flights. GAS can arrange full trip support including hotel coordination and ground transportation.
